Pacific Coast Trip - September 2003 with John, Paul, Tom and Bob Tom, John and Paul bicycled from Olympia, WA. to Santa Barbara, CA in 21 days, covering 1350 miles and 73,000 vertical feet. Bob joined us in Florence, OR riding with the group until he departed us just north of San Francisco, CA. The first 5 days we bicycled in rain and a headwind. After that we had sun and wind, except for thick fog from Santa Cruz to Montery and then arriving in Santa Barbara. We encountered 90 degree heat in San Francisco along with lots of traffic as we peddled up and over Devil's Slide south of San Francisco on our way to Half-Moon Bay. Over all a great trip. The California coast makes the Oregon coast seem flat! Several firsts were accomplished on this tour: For Tom, it was his first attempt at touring. He seemed to enjoy it and is looking forward to more opportunities. For John, Paul and Tom is was the most days that they has bicycled consecutively - 21. |
