Day 5 - September 13  - 47 Miles – Summer Lake Hot Springs to Silver Lake, OR

No frost this morning, but it was cold.  Breakfast in camp again, as the sun was rising in the east.  On the way out, we stopped at the office for coffee and freshly baked cinnamon rolls.  Gentle ride around Summer Lake.  Lake seemed so large, but it was always away in the distance, like a giant mirage.  We saw many an eagle, numerous red tailed hawks, several herds of antelopes and some more Sand Hill Cranes.  Stopped in Summer Lake for snacks before we tackled Picture Rock Pass.  At the summit, we looked at the petroglyphs.  Dick wanted to have a “no pedaling” race which we did.  John won due to his aerodynamics, but Dick placed second, Steve third, Tom fourth and Bill fifth.  It began to get hotter after we descended from Picture Rock Pass and entered another long and wide valley. Had lunch at the only café in town and then went to find the city park in Silver Lake but decided to stay at the RV park as it had showers and flush toilets instead of the “honey bucket” at the city park.  After showers, some reading and a couple of beers, all but Steve we went to the café for dinner.  Steve stayed in camp and cooked food he was carrying.  In bed by 8 pm.

Day 6 - September 14 - 87 miles – Silver Lake, OR to Collier State Park on Hwy 97.

Woke to another frosty morning and kids catching the school bus at 6:45.  Steve decided to have breakfast in camp while the rest of us went back to the café for breakfast.  We all needed the fuel for our long day of 70 miles.  We were on the road by 8 am heading west.  We took the Silver Creek Road for 6 miles into a strong headwind and a nasty hill before we discovered we were on the wrong road.  So we turn around and headed back to Silver Lake.  John hit 54 mph on the steep downhill.  Once back on the main road, we found the Silver Lake Road a mile further and turned left heading west.  The day warmed up quickly as we cycled through the rolling country of juniper and sagebrush.  Eventually the juniper was replace with large ponderosa pine trees.  We continued to climb in stair steps then dropping into windy flats and small valleys.  Finding the summit, we began a slow decent towards the Klamath Marsh. Stopped for lunch in a nice pine stand then resumed our trek westerly towards the marsh.  Upon reaching the Klamath Marsh, the wind picked up and we formed a pace line to assist Dick and Bill on the 10 mile pull to Hwy 97.  The 52 miles from Silver Lake to Hwy 97 had very few cars and was a lovely, peaceful and enjoyable ride.  Once we reached Hwy 97, our last 18 miles provided us with extremely heavy traffic composed of lots of truck, little shoulder and a strong headwind. Two miles from Collier State Park construction narrowed the road to 1 lane.  The construction was on a wonderful downhill and we were allowed to go through by ourselves as they held the traffic both ways for us.  Found a good campsite near the water and showers in Collier State Park.  The park was full and quite noisy.  Dinner in camp and to be early as the day was longer than planned. Bed by 7:45 pm

Day 7 - September 15 - Miles 62 - Collier State Park to Running Y, Klamath Falls, OR Woke again to frost and freezing temperatures.  The trees did not provide us with much protection for the cold weather.  Had a quick breakfast and then off.  We decided due to the traffic not to take Hwy 97 into Klamath Falls (35 miles) but rather to go a round the west side of Klamath Lake.  So we headed off to Fort Klamath on the road to Crater Lake.  Stopped at the store in Fort Klamath for snacks before we headed south to find the Westside Road.  Very pleasant ride very flat in the beginning and then rolling all the way to Hwy 140 that runs between Medford and Klamath Falls.  We had been told there was a significant climb going this way and we found it about 6 miles from the Running Y.  Major climb of over 700 feet with construction the entire way.  Great decent after the summit, but Steve, who had been having problems with several loose spokes all day, got a flat half way down the decent.  Tom, Dick and Bill headed for the Running Y while John waited for Steve.  Once we were down at lake level we encountered large clouds of mosquitoes and little green bugs as we road along the lake.  Numerous white pelicans were on the lake.  We all met at the vehicles that we had left at the Running Y.  Loaded up the vehicles, took showers, got some dinner and headed back to Redding and Olympia respectively.

Taking a break after a long climb.  Followed Goose Lake for 15- 20 miles on way to Lakeview, Oregon
